Damita’s son was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at age 8. As the medical bills piled up, Damita started to sell drugs in order to pay for his medical costs. She was arrested and given a life without parole sentence for drug trafficking. She had only two prior nonviolent offenses for drug possession. Eleven years into her sentence, Damita’s son passed away from complications of his illness. She was not allowed to attend his funeral. After serving 21 years in prison, her sentence was commuted in 2017. The first thing Damita did when she was released was visit her son’s grave.
